Fielding questions about Nov. 8 City Bond Referendum

October 11, 2022 Government & Politics

Vote Yes for Bonds Committee volunteer Faith Triggs, right; City of Charlotte Budget Director Ryan Bergman, left; detail from plan for Eastway/Shamrock intersection overhaul.

Oct. 11, 2022

Mary Johnson announced that Forum facilitators had tried to reach opponents of the Nov. 8 City of Charlotte bond issue, and invited anyone in the Belmont Center audience who is opposed to the bond issue to speak at this part of the morning’s Forum.  Earlier, the  Forum had heard from candidates for Mecklenburg Board of County Commissioners Districts 4, 5 and 6.

The bond issue discussion featured Faith Triggs, a housing-focused community activist and volunteer with the Vote Yes For Bonds Committee, and City of Charlotte Budget Director Ryan Bergman, who fielded detailed questions. Questions about how city-assisted  housing is sited, and how historically it has  routinely been sited in low-income westside areas, were discussed. Johnson herself said she is sometimes in favor of the bond issue, and sometimes opposed.

An introduction to the city’s online capital projects dashboard is here.

The video below includes the bond issue discussion. Slides from the city’s bond overview presentation dated Aug. 31 are posted below the video; technical difficulties prevented the Forum audience from viewing any part of the oveview. The overview may be downloaded as a long PDF here.
