West Charlotte Rec Center renovation: An update

Tradesmen’s trucks dot the parking lot. A demolition company has workers on site cleaning up. The 1960s West Charlotte Recreation Center’s long-promised renovation is under way.

Below in pictures are indications of the work as of today. The original design plans as shared with the neighborhood in 2014 are here.

Looking from back of room where Forum met, through old kitchen to second meeting room. Kitchen plumbing has been removed. HVAC ductwork installation has begun on ceiling.

Parks officials said Monday that the walls forming the old kitchen would be removed, to make one larger room. Walls are being adjusted in the area of the old men’s bathroom for a new kitchen.

Plumbing has been installed in center of old game room to the right of foyer. The exterior door used to open on to a patio that has been removed to permit expansion of the building.

In the gym, basketball backboards remain, but bleachers and the worn plastic floor have been removed. One of the major elements of the renovation will occur behind the blue paint at left, where a larger fitness room will be installed.

The low wall and patio on the Ablewood Road end of the buildng have been been removed. The 2014 renovation plans called for an extension of the low building across the front of the gym, to create another meeting room. The brown door at left is the same one shown behind the plumbing already installed in the center of the old game room.
