The Mecha Cafe deal

Page initiated Feb. 1, 2019

On Jan. 29, longtime Forum participant Raphael Basisa announced a $200 donation to the Forum to cover expenses. A video of his announcement is below.

Several months ago, frequent Forum participant LaMor Leach offered the Forum a discount if it wanted to buy and brew his Mecha Cafe gourmet grounds. The Forum’s Coffee Pot operates on free-will donations, and for many years those donations have averaged just over 30 cents per cup – not exactly a gourmet cash flow.

Could these two offers be merged somehow? Could what the Forum has been paying for the same number of ounces of coffee grounds be combined with a part of the Basisa gift to take advantage of the Leach discount offer? And how long would the deal bring higher-quality coffee to the Forum? Co-founder Sarah Stevenson’s reaction after Basisa’s offer: Let’s find out.

So beginning Feb. 19, when Mecha Cafe coffee is in the regular coffee urn, a tag like the one above will hang on the urn. Financial details will be tracked below.

The current deal covers only regular coffee, which is what most Forum participants drink.

As usual, all coffee is free to all; it is not sold. Free-will donations left in the donations box will continue to go to support the costs of the coffee and condiments. At the end of each month, the coffee fund is zero’d out and any balance is moved to the MJ Entrepreneurial Action Fund, which has lately been used to make charitable donations each December. The financial records of the Coffee fund are here, the Action Fund here.

On May 15, 2020, deep into the coronavirus pandemic, all funds from the coffee service were consolidated in the Coffee Fund for possible use if, after the pandemic closes, coffee service can be reinstituted in some new way. Otherwise, all funds will be donated to charity. Closeout financial records are here.
