Discerning a path toward higher voter turnout

November 12, 2024 Government & Politics

Nov. 12, 2024

Monifa Drayton worked in leadership positions, and more recently opened a coaching and leadership consulting firm. She opened her Forum presentation by saying she was unable to comment on her resignation last week as executive director of the Mecklenburg Democratic Party.

But in fact her presentation goes to the heart of  what she learned during her time in that party position. And for those willing to swallow hard, Drayton’s message has key insights for all political parties on how to raise Election Day turnout by registered voters in underserved neighborhoods who now see government as not working for them.

All voter turnout methods work a little, she said. But they are not the answer that she has come to.

Dedrick Russell’s report on Drayton’s Forum visit is on WBTV here.

News coverage of Drayton’s resignation are at QCityMetro, WFAE, and the Observer. Axios, first to report the resignation, included the full text of Drayton’s resignation letter.

Below the video from this morning are slides from Drayton’s presentation, incorporating Drayton’s later additions Tuesday evening: a slide on the history of the jellybean jar, additions to the slide on political leaders, and additions to the agenda slide near the end. The revised slides may also be downloaded as a single PDF here.

The donation

In addition to being a very serious former journalist, Forum regular Ken Koontz is a notable cutup. During the Forum Koontz expressed to Monifa Drayton his appreciation for her work for the Demoratic Party during the recent election cycle, said he liked “to put my money where my mouth is,” then got up and delivered his appreciation in person. “I’ll make sure to pass it along.” Drayton said.
