The Nov. 8 election may make the decision moot in a matter of months, but for a day or more the N.C. Supreme Court has rejected objections to ordering the state to fund a previously agreed-to intervention to improve the educational opportunities in N.C. public schools throughout the state.
More than 20 years after the Leandro lawsuit was filed, today’s ruling is not the final decision, as a 4-3 majority of the court acknowledged. Thousands more children may move through an underfinanced state system of public education before, if ever, the case is finally resolved.
The 227-page ruling, downloadable as a PDF here, is a must-read for all North Carolinians interested in the history of the case, and what the court says are the high stakes involved for the next generations of North Carolinians.
