Policing and listening: Nurturing efforts to improve safety

April 20, 2021 Government & Politics

Police Chief Johnny Jennings, and Jonathan Chow, an ex-officer advocating safety precautions among Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders.

April 20, 2021

CMPD Chief Johnny Jennings offered that when officers talk to residents in neighborhoods experiencing violent crime, residents are also interested in drivers ignoring stop signs, whose habits  might endanger the children playing near the street.

Jonathan Chow acknowledged that language barriers play a role in the nonreporting of crime among minorities, but said that some of the issues he works on among residents and business owners are things they simply had not considered doing, from locking doors to installing security systems.

Chow is a former CMPD officer now assisting Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders with crime prevention strategies. Jennings, who joined CMPD in 1992, was promoted from deputy chief effective July 1, 2020. He is a a native of Jefferson City, Tennessee.
