Challenge to Bonapart’s Senate 39 candidacy upheld locally

January 8, 2020 Candidates & Ballots

Jan. 8, 2020

Darrell Bonapart told the Charlotte Observer Tuesday he would appeal to the State Board of Elections a decision by the Mecklenburg County Board of Elections to uphold challenge to his candidacy in Senate District 39 primary on March 3.

The challenge contested Bonapart’s claim of residence in Steele Creek. The appeal may delay that primary election in southwest Charlotte. The primary would include Democrat DeAndrea Salvador. Republican Joshua Niday has filed and does not face a primary. As of Wednesday morning, Jan. 8, Bonapart’s name remained on the Board’s online candidate list for the District 39 Senate seat.

Observer reporter Allison Kuznitz’s report of the Mecklenburg Board’s decision is here. More background is here.
