Longtime Forum participant Dr. Vernon Herron was buried today at Oaklawn Cemetery in this city of his birth.
He returned to Charlotte in retirement after pastoring Baptist churches in Pennsylvania, serving his church as a missionary, and working at the Division of Social Justice and Welfare of the National Council of Churches.
But few at the Forum found Dr. Herron retiring. If a speaker was speaking too quietly, he piped up. If things did not seem to be in good order, he objected. His sly humor seemed boundless, as was his formal grace in public.
Dr. Herron wrote a blog, modestly if ironically named “Herron Speaks.” He founded a genealogy study service. (Parts of both of those sites, https://herronspeaks.blogspot.com and https://www.cgsweb.org/index.html, will be accessible at the Internet’s Wayback Machine even if the websites lapse with Herron’s death.)
Dr. Herron’s viewing was at 10 a.m. The funeral was at noon at Friendship Missionary Baptist Church, where he had been a member since 2005. A B&W scan of the color program from the funeral is here.
Dr. Herron’s obituary on Legacy.com is here. A PDF of the obituary is here.
