ANNOUNCEMENTS from June 4, 2013:

Sarah Stevenson announced that June 11 presenters will be from J.C. Smith University detailing plans for the Indaba community meeting on July 27 for residents of the Northwest Corridor.

Pape Ndiaye, president of the Juneteenth Festival of the Carolinas, appealed for assistance with financing the upcoming four-day festival. More from Ndiaye is here. A flier is here.

Gloria Rembert announced that the Black Political Caucus would move its June meeting to June 23 to avoid a conflict with Fathers Day. The meeting June 23 will be at 6 p.m. at the old Double Oaks Elementary School.

Beverly Irby announced that a memorial service for Dr. Rosamuel Dawkins Jr., who died May 16, would be held this Saturday, June 8 at 2 p.m. at the Naomi Drenan Recreation Center, 750 Beal St. off Wendover Road. Irby said Dr. Dawkins assisted the center in its service to a homeless population. A flier about the service is here.

Brandi Williams announced the death of City Council member James Mitchell's mother. Service is Thursday, June 6 at noon at East Stonewall AME Zion, 1729 Griers Grove Rd.

Brandi Williams announced that the Hip Hop Caucus would hold an event June 22 at 10 a.m. at the Urban League building, 740 W. 5th St.

Kevin Jackson announced for John White, who had to leave, that White will run for City Council District 2.

Paul Holmes said he would have more information next week on an ongoing protest of reconstruction plans for a short section of Beatties Ford Road.

Kaa Ma'at sent in an announcement of an Operation Education Community Fun Fest on Sunday, July 28 from 3-7 p.m. at Just Kidz Barber Salon, 2017A Beatties Ford Rd. Details here. Donations of gently used school uniforms are being accepted.

Carolyn Dyma sent in the June calendar for the Beatties Ford Road Library. "I just want to highlight our newest book club which will have its first meeting on Thursday, June 20 at 2 p.m. We will be discussing the book Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand."

Zack Hill pointed out a flier  for a benefit concert by Nnenna Freelon and the Branford Marsalis Quartet on Saturday, June 14 at 7 p.m. at Freedom Park. Tickers are $5 per person or $20 for families of 4 or more. Concert proceeds go to Partners for Parks to build a playground.

Ken Koontz announced the death of Josephine Mitchell, mother of City Council District 2 member James Mitchell, on June 2. Service was June 6.

ANNOUNCEMENTS from June 18, 2013:

 

Paul Holmes announced that his neighbors were still fighting construction of a concrete median on their portion of Beatties Ford Road, and asked that Forum participants drive the Capps Hill Mine to Slater Road portion to see for themselves. He encouraged attendance at a June 24 City Council meeting on the subject. A flier is here.

Carlenia Ivory announced that CMS would hold a back-to-school event on Saturday, Aug. 10 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at The Park (the old Merchandise Mart) on East Independence Boulevard. Required immunizations will be available on-site. Ivory said she would bring a sheet next week for nonprofits and for-profit providers to sign up to participate.

Gloria Rembert announced that the Black Political Caucus meeting for June would be Sunday, June 23, moved from its regular date to avoid a conflict with Fathers Day. Addressing the meeting will be Mayor Pro Tem Patrick Cannon, CMS Board Chair Mary McCray and Commissioners Chair Pat Cotham. The meeting June 23 will be at 6 p.m. at the old Double Oaks Elementary School.

Al Austin announced that he would file for election to represent District 2 on Charlotte City Council.

Anthony Hunt said Juneteenth President Pape Ndiaye wished to thank all who helped support last weekend's 16th annual celebration at Independence Park. He said he would have financial information to share next week. More on Ndiaye's June 4 visit at the Forum is here.

Sheirmiar White announced that he represents DGP Energy, Inc., a energy audit firm doing work with the three-year, federally funded Connect Our Future program being run by Centralina Council of Governments. Connect is seeking to sign up, by June 30, about 30 homeowners of single-family detached residences in a 14-county area including Mecklenburg to host Home Energy Performance Audits. This program doesn't replace windows; it will create a credible database on home energy use in the 14-county area. The Connect Our Future website is here. Joyce Waddell announced the 11th annual UNCF Maya Angelou Women Who Lead Lunch for Saturday, June 29 at noon at the Westin Charlotte, 601 S. College St. The event benefits UNCF and area college scholarships.

Beverly Irby encouraged Forum participants to call their legislators to appeal for a swift transition for Medicaid reimbursements to Medicaid providers. A state press release on June 4 marking the successful completion of system testing prior to the July 1 activation is here. The release states: "NCTracks will replace the 35-year-old Medicaid claims system known as MMIS, as well as other computer systems that process claims for state-paid mental health, public health and rural health services. To avoid disruptions in DHHS claims processing or payments after July 1, health care providers should plan to have claims, eligibility and other business staff train in NCTracks." The Carolina Journal, published by the John Locke Foundation in Raleigh, published a skeptical piece June 19 about the twice-delayed, $484 million project that must process 80,000 checks a month to hospitals and providers.
