Having difficult conversations can protect family treasures

July 15, 2026 Community & Housing

Shewonia Roberts found herself leading her siblings through the complexities of both meeting their parents’ medical and legal needs as they approached death, but doing it in a way that would honor their parents’ wishes.

But first they had to find out what those needs and wishes were.

Sprinkled through this morning’s presentation in the video at the bottom of this page are Roberts’ stories that illuminate the journey her family took. The stories alone may convince you that tackling end-of life issues is both feasible and satisfying. The task is for all families, not just rich ones.

Roberts has published a paperback guide that might help you if your family has been putting off dealing with the needs and wishes of a family member.

Roberts, who was not briefed before Tuesday on ways the Forum could display presentation materials during the meeting, sent in information later. Below, lightly edited, is that text:

Why do we spend so much time preparing for the life we are building, but so little time preparing for the legacy we will leave behind?

We prepare for birthdays, vacations, weddings and even bringing new life into this world. We prepare for the milestones, transitions and moments that matter most to us.

But the conversations that protect our loved ones, honor our wishes, and preserve what matters most are often the conversations we postpone.

Shewonia Roberts is the founder of True Legacy and author of “Before I Die,” a practical guide that helps individuals and families prepare for the future with confidence and clarity. Through speaking, workshops, consulting and community conversations, she creates space for families to discuss legacy, caregiving, advance care planning and preserving what matters most.

We do not wait for the storm. We build shelter before the rain. One of the greatest gifts you can leave your loved ones is peace of mind.

How? Prepare people. Empower them to embrace the planning process that will allow them to celebrate life, honor their loved ones and leave a legacy of care, intention and generational wealth.

Legacy is not just about what you leave behind. It is about what you pass forward.
