Primary contenders live into their respect for each other

Perhaps today’s candidate forum could have turned nasty, as many have this year. But with a simple request from appointed Council member Edwin Peacock (center picture, white shirt) that the candidates talk about what they “admire and like” in their opponent “and why”, the candidates displayed their apparent respect for one another and, win or lose, their commitment to work together for the future of District 5.

This morning’s Forum was full of talk about encouraging businesses in District 5. And much frank talk. But rather than pull out quotes, readers should view the video and come away with their own impressions.

Viewers will find some substantive differences between the candidates. But always set aside any assurance that a candidate,. if elected, will attend every meeting and speak with every person, when incumbents might no longer say such things, having faced the reality of seeking balance between family life and the 24/7 demands of a nominally part-time job.

The event allowed the candidates to offer a broader picture of their personal stories than prospective voters will find on their respective websites. For that alone, the video is priceless.
