Black History Month: Elisa Chinn-Gary’s path to service

February 21, 2017 Government & Politics

Feb. 21, 2017

Elisa Chinn-Gary returned to the Forum today to tell her life story and the tasks she has embraced as Clerk of Superior Court in Mecklenburg County.

Among them: winning over holdovers members of the 200-person staff who were loyal to her predecessor; managing a paper flow that requires perfection even while short-staffed; and finding ways to help independent agents throughout the justice system to examine their processes for the implicit bias that leaves members of the public underserved or denied fair treatment.

As an officer of the court, Chinn-Gary is not free to speak her mind on all topics. She dodged and weaved a bit during the session, possibly on that account. But one thing was clear: Many of the females in the audience were envious when they realized from her stories that her father cooked at home as she was growing up, and that her husband cooks for her as well.

In the video below, Chinn-Gary’s presentation begins at minute 8:40. The Q&A session begins at minute 35:20.
