The plan is about more than soccer, more than sports tourism, more than afterschool learning opportunities for children or jobs at the old Eastland Mall site or boosting an entire quadrant of the City of Charlotte. All of those goals were discussed this morning, along with others.
But the tenor of the discussion, and questions and comments from participants in the Belmont Center room, focused also on ending a painful dozen or more years during which one of the key retail magnets in East Charlotte collapsed under the weight of declining household wealth, changing demographics, violence and inattention, then sat as a vacant escape of asphalt as the city, which bought the site, skittered about looking for another vision and people with the resources and resolve to make it happen.
Will every element of the project come to fruition in two years, or 10? Skeptics may not hold their breath. But there were positive vibes in the room this morning. Viewers of the video below may conclude that the leadership is in place to make the project a success, even if changes are – should be – made based on what will best serve children and families in East Charlotte.
Two websites were mentioned today: Eastland Sports. and. Charlotte Soccer Academy.
Below the video from this morning’s presentation are the three presentation slides prepared by the presenters. The first slide was shown early in the meeting; the other two were not shown due to technical issues with keeping the livestream going.
