Prospective members of The New Generation of African American Philanthropists are asked for a monetary pledge of just a dollar a day. That’s much less, members of Tuesday’s panel asserted, than most African-Americans are already committing every day to their kin, their neighbors and their communities. Philanthropists don’t have to be rich, and there are many ways other than cash to commit to philanthropy.
Organizing for collaborative support of one another, and coordinated gift-giving to address pressing needs in Charlotte’s African-American neighborhoods, has been the work of NGAAP for 18 years. And according to founding member Valaida Fulwood, the group over those 18 years has not just addressed some needs, but also helped members coalesce around the idea of building the group into a full-fledged foundation for the long term.
