Coronavirus Basics

March 16, 2020 Education & Health

March 16, 2020

The following information was provided to patients by Tryon Medical Partners, which reports that it treats about 15% of Mecklenburg’s entire population.

COVID-19 is a new virus. We learn more about it every day. Overall, the risk of contracting coronavirus in Charlotte is still very low. The best way to avoid getting sick is to wash your hands properly and avoid touching your face.

General symptoms of coronavirus infection include fever, cough and difficulty breathing.

Luckily, most COVID-19 infections are mild. About 80% of those infected will fully recover in one to two weeks. Of those infected, 20% are at higher risk and fall into one or more of the following categories:

  • Are 60 and older
  • Have lung disease, such as asthma or COPD
  • Have congestive heart failure or acute cardiac issues
  • Have suppressed immune systems
