Success stories from a charter’s first year

Tom Hanley mostly doesn’t talk in specifics. Except for his enrollment.

In a town where there have been spectacular collapses of N.C. charter schools during the first year at a high cost to individual students and the state, Commonwealth High School has enrolled 300 students, about 50% over the 205-student projection on which the initial budget was built.

Hanley, principal of the school near the old Eastland Mall site in east Charlotte, mentioned that the for-profit charter operator he represents will proceed with Stewart Creek High in August. Stewart Creek will be off Freedom Drive in an old K-Mart. Hanley said some of Commonwealth’s students who live on the west side will transfer, to cut their commutes.
