ANNOUNCEMENTS from Jan. 8, 2013:

Ken Koontz announced that Malachi Greene is at Presbyterian Hospital. Reached later, Greene announced that he would move Tuesday evening to Charlotte Health Care Center, 1735 Toddville Road for a stint of rehabilitation. Koontz said Greene welcomes visitors and calls at his cellphone, 704-351-9935. Reached later, Greene confirmed his phone number and his delight at the prospect that his many Forum friends would be calling. "I'm a people person," he said. "When I get tired, if somebody calls I get charged up again."

Zack Hill announced that political activist and academic Angela Davis will be at Davidson College on Feb. 12 to present the annual Warn Lecture. The free lecture will be at 8 p.m. in the Duke Family Performance Hall on campus. No reservations are required. Davis is an emerita professor at the University of California at Santa Cruz.

Zack Hill announced that a computer training class for seniors will be held Saturday, Jan. 12 from 1-3:30 p.m. at Ivory Baker Recreation Center, 1920 Stroud Park Court off Oaklawn Avenue.

Carlenia Ivory announced a concert this Sunday, Jan. 13 at 4 p.m. at Varick Conference Center, 3165 Zions Renaissance Lane, to raise funds for the Sarah and Sammy Stevenson Endowed Scholarship Fund at Johnson C. Smith University. The scholarship will be awarded to a CMS student attending JCSU. For $40 tickets, see Ivory or online. A flier is here. Blanche Penn announced that the Silver Fox senior cheerleading squad would be filmed by WBTV on Friday for airing later in January.

Blanche Penn announced that she was willing to accept donations toward the cost of her March trip to London to study Shakespeare in connection with her theater major at UNCC.

Blanche Penn announced that the Wallace Pruitt Recreation Center will have a public showing from Feb. 18-23 of displays on Harriet Tubman and the Underground Railroad, along with material showcasing African Americans' many inventions.

Carmen Blackmon announced that Charlotte nonprofit afterschool provider Above and Beyond Students had been included in President Obama's Jan. 19 National Day of Service. Volunteers will do painting at the afterschool program's Seigle Point facility at 110 Winding Path Way. Details and a way to volunteer are here.

Malyn Pratt announced that the League of Women Voters would hold its Civics 101 series on local government. Sessions are 6:15-8:30 p.m. at the Government Center on Tuesday, Feb. 5 (county government); Tuesday, Feb. 12 (CMS); Tuesday, Feb. 19 (District Courts); Monday, Feb. 25 (city government); and Tuesday, March 5 (graduation and dinner) at the Charlotte Observer, 600 S. Linda Cruz announced a forum for prospective parents at Charlotte Choice Charter, 1000 Anderson St. in the old Plaza Road Pre-K building, on Saturday, Jan. 26 from 10 a.m.-noon. The new charter expects to enroll 216 students in K-5 its first year beginning in August. Dianna Davis announced a Charlotte African American Festival for Saturday, Feb. 23 and Sunday, Feb. 24 at Independence High School, 1967 Patriot Drive, organized by The North Carolina Film Factory and sponsored by WGIV Radio and Carolina Kid News TV show. The event will sponsor concerts, art, literature, food, dancers, drummers, a marching band competition, step competition, a pageant, speakers, vendors, awards and recognition. Special attractions include a quarter-mile through the Underground Railroad with a Harriet Tubman impersonator; and the Black History Walk of Fame featuring live impersonators of famous African Americans. Karen Gibson announced that the McCrorey Y would donate 20 tickets to the MLK breakfast on Monday, Jan. 21 to the Forum for distribution by Sarah Stevenson. She said parking would cost $6. The Y's Michael DeVaul said there would not be valet parking. DeVaul said 1,000 people were already expected, and if the crowd swells to 1,200 it will be the largest ever in the series of prayer breakfasts.

Al Austin of Johnson C. Smith University thanked Sarah Stevenson for her Sunday event that raised money toward a new scholarship at JCSU. More on the event will be here as it becomes available.

Al Austin announced that JCSU is gearing up for the CIAA tournament Feb. 26 through March 2. Tickets will go on sale soon. Asked what would be torn down to make way for the new science building financed by a Duke Endowment grant, Austin said the science building would replace a parking lot. Asked about new use of the chapel on the JCSU campus, Austin said the building would need renovation, but that Donnie Shell is using it more for spiritual life activities.

Ken Simmons asked about the demise of the education department at Johnson C. Smith. Al Austin deferred to JCSU President Ronald Carter, who was not present but may be invited to attend a Forum later.

Carlenia Ivory announced that CMS Assistant Superintendent for Community Partnerships and Family Engagement LaTarzja Henry would like to work with the Forum in scheduling CMS staff to present, "hopefully on a monthy basis," to address questions from the Forum.
