Jane Whitley sent in an invitation to a holiday party sponsored by the Democratic Women of Mecklenburg County on Thursday, Dec. 12 from 6-8 p.m. at the law office of Tin Fulton Walker and Owen, 301 E. Park Ave. in Dilworth.

ANNOUNCEMENTS from Dec. 10, 2013

Sarah Stevenson announced that the Forum's annual Christmas Party will be Tuesday, Dec. 17 from 8:30-10:30 a.m. in the Gym at the West Charlotte Recreation Center, 2401 Kendall Drive near West Charlotte High School. Bring canned or other nonperishable goods that will be donated to Thomasboro Elementary School; and an unwrapped something to be given away as part of the party's Take A Gift game. A full breakfast will be served for a $5 donation.

Joyce Waddell announced that departing school board members would be honored and newly elected school board members would be sworn in on Wednesday, Dec. 11 at 5 p.m., with a reception following, and the new board's first meeting following that at 6 p.m. She thanked voters for returning her to the board with 98.7% of the vote in District 3, the highest percentage of anyone elected to the board.

Johnnie Collins thanks Forum members for their prayers and support during her recuperation from knee surgery (Announcements, Sept. 3).

Johnnie Collins announced she had $1 raffle tickets for the Dec. 13 Hornets Elementary School PTA drawing. Top prize is $1,000.

Blanche Penn announced that Wallace Pruitt Recreation Center would participate in Kwanzaa on Dec. 27.

Blanche Penn announced that the Black History Invention Tour would return to Wallace Pruitt Recreation Center Feb. 17-21. An exhibit on the Underground Railroad and a maze on the Barack Obama presidency will round out the exhibit.

Blanche Penn announced that the Silver Fox cheerleading squad would participate in the Gator Bowl Parade on New Years. The parade will be broadcast live on WJXT Channel 4 in Jacksonville, Fla. from 3-5 p.m. and streamed live on their website.

Blanche Penn announced that she would graduate from UNCC with a bachelor of arts in theatre on Dec. 14.

Joyce Waddell announced that the National Council of Negro Women will hold a seasonal tea from 1-3 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 14 at Greater Mt. Moriah Baptist Church, 727 W. Trade St. Tickets are $10.

Joyce Waddell announced an education summit on Jan. 22 with speaker Paul Tough at Friendship Missionary Baptist Church. Details here.

Joyce Waddell announced an annual Christmas dance to benefit the Second Ward Alumni House, to be held Saturday, Dec. 21 at 8 p.m. Details here.

Tina Knox announced a free "Get Noticed Get Hired" training session, including mock interviews, resume review and dress for interview success counseling on Saturday, Jan. 25 from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. at the Dowd YMCA, 400 E. Morehead St.

Tina Knox announced that she and Rashad Phillips had adopted Thomasboro Elementary School and would hold an event at the school Monday, Dec. 16 offering a free Zumba fitness class and free haircuts for the boys. Adults will distribute nonperishable food items for the students to take home for the holiday. Details: 704-363-5420.

Toni Tupponce announced that the Sign of the Times jazz ensemble and the Charlotte Symphony String Ensemble would collaborate on the free "Bridging Musical Worlds" concert on Sunday, Jan. 19 at 7 p.m. at the Historic Excelsior Club, 921 Beatties Ford Rd.

Toni Tupponce announced that the Sign of the Times' 14th Annual Black History Concert will be March 28-29 at West Charlotte High School. Theme is: "We Came Before Columbus."

Carlenia Ivory announced that the new CMS Community Partnerships & Family Engagement Department is vetting community volunteers, to have volunteers serve where they are needed most.

Carlenia Ivory announced the free Growing The Dream Luncheon, a free event at noon on Saturday, Jan. 18 at Johnson C. Smith University. Details here. A form is here for nomination of persons in the community to be honored at this event as Unsung Heroes.

The Forum is on holiday break. There will be no meeting Dec. 24. There were no announcements at the Dec. 17 holiday party. The notes below cover through Dec. 22, 2013. During the remainder of the holiday break, announcements will be sent intermittently.
