Ledger Morrissette sent in a
form due Dec. 5 for nominations for the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Medallion Award to be awarded in January by the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Community Relations Committee. The award has been given annually since 1985 in connection with the MLK Holiday festivities.

Natheley McElrath sent in a save-the-date for Sarah and Sammy Stevenson First Scholarship Fund Concert on Sunday, Jan. 13 from 4-6 p.m. at the Varick Renaissance Center, 3165 Zion Renaissance Lane. Info: Stevenson at 704-392-9503.

ANNOUNCEMENTS from Nov. 13, 2012:

Laura McClettie announced a community forum sponsored by Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Alpha Lambda Omega chapter on human trafficking and its impact on the Charlotte Community, to be held Thursday, Nov. 15 from 6-8 p.m. at West Charlotte High School auditorium, 2219 Senior Drive. Ken Simmons introduced Phyllis Handford, head of school of StudentFirst Academy, formed in 2000 and operating out of Midwood Baptist from 2005-2011, which opens in fall 2013 as a charter school  at the former Wilson Middle School site, 7020 Tuckaseegee Rd.

Beverly Irby announced that C.W. Williams Community Health Center received a grant last spring to open a dental clinic, and is now serving children ages 0-9 at a pediatric dental clinic at its 3333 Wilkinson Blvd. clinic and will open a full dental clinic at 900 East Blvd. in February.

Zack Hill announced that CMS Supt. Heath Morrison would hold a town hall meeting on Thursday, Nov. 15 at 6 p.m. at Myers Park High, 2400 Colony Rd. This is the final town hall in the listening and learning tour that Morrison began in July.

Zack Hill announced the weekly computer class for seniors would resume after a two-week layoff on Saturday, Nov. 17 from 1-3:30 p.m. at Ivory Baker Recreation Center, 1920 Stroud Park Court off Oaklawn Avenue.

Harold Cogdell announced that the Board of County Commissioners would hold a naming ceremony on Friday at 2 p.m. at the old criminal courts courthouse, 700 E. Fourth St., to name the building for the late Clifton Johnson, who in 1974 became the state's first African-American Chief District Judge and later served on the N.C. Court of Appeals.

Sarah Stevenson announced a save-the-date for the First Scholarship Fund Concert on Jan. 13, 2013 from 4-6 p.m. at the Varick Renaissance Center, 3165 Zion Renaissance Lane, to benefit the Sarah and Sammy Stevenson Scholarship Fund. Stevenson said the concert will feature "some of Sammy's friends who are coming back to establish the scholarship" at Johnson C. Smith University. Tickets $40.

Laura Lewin sent in an announcement of a program for parents interested in information about 20 non-traditional and non-tuition middle and high school programs in the Charlotte area. The free "One Size (School!) Does NOT Fit All" program will be held on Sunday, Dec. 2 from 4-5:30 p.m. at the Levine Jewish Community Center, 5007 Providence Rd. A flier is here.

Valaida Fullwood sent in an op-ed piece she wrote to mark the Thursday, Nov. 15 National Philanthropy Day, along with her photo and the front cover of her 2011 book, Giving Back.

Dorothy Brown Jackson sent in an announcement that the Black Political Caucus of Charlotte-Mecklenburg will hold a Chair's Open House on Sunday, Dec. 16 from 6-10 p.m. at its headquarters, 1326 Woodward Ave.

ADDENDUM to ANNOUNCEMENTS from Nov. 13, 2012, sent Nov. 15, 2012:

Dianna Davis announced that she is seeking volunteers to assist in a 2013 African American Community Festival. The goal of this festival is to bring the entire African American Community together for a large weekend celebration of our heritage. An initial meeting will be held at The NC Film Factory at 5457 Monroe Road on Sunday, Nov 18, 2012 at 3 p.m. Interested parties must RSVP to 704-777-9928 or by e-mail.

Sarah Stevenson read an Observer story announcing a "Solving It Together" public forum whose aim is to create "open, constructive conversation about how elected leaders with political differences can find common ground." The event will be Friday, Nov. 30 from 7-9 p.m. at UNC Charlotte Center City, 320 E. 9th St. Parking at 701 N. Brevard St. across from First Ward Elementary. Registration free but is required. Sarah Stevenson announced the death of Kat Crosby, 87, former CMS teacher, principal, assistant superintendent and key leader during desegregation of the community's schools in the 1970s. Her obituary is here and cached here. Funeral is Saturday, Nov. 24, with visitation from 10:30 a.m. and funeral at noon at First Baptist Church-West, 1801 Oaklawn Ave.
