February 18, 2013
Dear Friends and Constituents,
I appreciate your interest and wanted to share with you some of the activity in the Legislature after having been sworn
in on January 7. The General Assembly convened January 30, 2013 and will be in session until mid-June to develop and balance a state budget as required by state law.
Standing Committee appointments have been made as well as Oversight and Study Committee appointments. My appointments are
listed below. The introduction of legislation is now underway. I have co-sponsored a number of bills including:
HB 7, Eugenics Compensation Program;
HB 44, Transition to Digital Learning
in Schools; HB 45,
Internet Access for Public Schools; HB 51,
Increase Access to Career/Technical Ed; HB64,
Honor Legislative Buildings 50th Anniversary; HB91,
Honor NAACPs Anniversary; and HB105,
Require Pulse Oximetry Newborn Screening.
Thus far two contentious bills have been before the legislature. After lengthy and highly publicized debates on the House
floor, House Bill 4,
Unemployment Insurance Fund Solvency and Program Changes, passed in both the House and Senate and has been sent to the Governor to be signed.
Senate Bill 4,
No Medical Exchange and No Medicaid Expansion; passed in the Senate and House and has been sent back to the Senate for concurrence before it is sent to the Governor. I opposed both these bills.
February kicks off the American Heart Associations commitment to raising awareness of Womens Heart Health, which is near
and dear to my heart. February has already been a busy month with numerous visitors from Charlotte. Our Mecklenburg Delegation has met with Chancellor Dubois of UNC Charlotte to discuss their legislative goals. This week the Delegation met with Jerry Richardson,
owner of the Panthers, and Charlotte Assistant City Manager Ron Kimball, who presented their proposal for the Panther Stadium. Also visiting my office from Charlotte were Dr. Tony Zeiss, President of Central Piedmont Community College; Charlotte Mecklenburg
School Board Chair Mary McCray and Vice Chair Tim Morgan. It was good to see both John Williford and John Ebert, two Charlotte physicians serving as Doctor for the Day in the House. And we celebrated the 50th Anniversary of the historic Legislative
Building on February 6. As a note of interest, 50 years ago I was a senior in high school and I remember how exciting it was to attend the opening ceremony of the Legislative Building. Little did I know 50 years later I would be serving in the Legislature.
Reminder: The Department of Treasurers
NC Cash Program
is a database of unclaimed property or cash that needs to be returned to the rightful owners. It is worth looking into.
Thank you as always for your interest in state government. If you have any questions about this information or anything
else that I can help with, please contact me or my Legislative Assistant, Beth LeGrande ([email protected])
at 919-733-6744. We are always glad to be of service.
