ANNOUNCEMENTS from April 2, 2013:

Ken Koontz announced that he and two associates are suing the city in connection with a nonpublic meeting at which the City Council discussed Panthers renovations. A press conference was to be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, April 2 on the subject.

Marc Friedland announced that the annual Mecklenburg County Democratic Party Convention would be held on Saturday, April 13 at Elizabeth Traditional School, 1601 Park Dr. with registration at 9 a.m. and the meeting beginning at 10. Officers are to be elected.

Marc Friedland announced that Charlotte Mayor Anthony Foxx would address the next meeting of Mecklenburg Senior Democrats on Friday, April 12 at 11:30 a.m. at Democratic Headquarters, 400 E. Morehead St.

Marc Friedland announced that N.C. Sen. Joel Ford would hold a town hall on Thursday, April 11 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at the police service center, 4150 Wilkinson Blvd.

Marc Friedland announced that the Community Relations Committee, Community Building Initiative and Mecklenburg Ministries would hold a community conversation titled, "Can We Talk About Gun Violence in Charlotte?" on Tuesday, April 16 from 7-8:30 p.m. at Pritchard Memorial Baptist Church, 1117 South Bld. Tammy Hill announced a meeting with Duke University researchers about groundwater contamination from brownfields adjoining Beatties Ford Road, to be held Tuesday night, April 2, from 6-8 p.m. in the technology building room 103 on the Johnson C. Smith University campus.

When the call went out for names of people considering running for office, Vi Lyles said she was considering running for Charlotte City Council at-large. Marc Friedland said he was considering running for first vice chair of the Mecklenburg Democratic Party. Not in any way in response to the prior two announcements, Malachi Greene said he was considering running for the county line.

Paul Holmes sent in an updated flier on a protest of plans for a concrete median on a portion of Beatties Ford Road.

Pamela Grundy announced a protest before the April 9 school board meeting on the subject of excessive standardized testing, and passed out a reminder about a petition on the subject.

Sheila Peltzer announced that there are three bills in the N.C. legislature on the subject of presumed shared parenting. Her presentation to the Forum on this subject is here. She urged people to call legislators in support; "otherwise these bills will die."

Maurice Jones announced that Entrepreneur High School, a public charter listed in Raleigh as seeking to open in the 2014-15 school year for grades 9 and up, is seeking a 30,000-square-foot space. Marc Friedland announced that Charlotte Mayor Anthony Foxx would address the city capital plan and streetcar at the next meeting of Mecklenburg Senior Democrats on Friday, April 12, with snacks at 11:30 a.m. and meeting from 12-1 p.m. The venue has changed to Walls Memorial AME Zion Church at 2722 Bancroft St., off North Graham.

Wayne Powers, longtime politician and even longertime jazz vocalist, announced that he would participate in a Jazz Vespers event sponsored by SouthPark Christian Church and Park Road Baptist Church, to be held Sunday, April 14 from 6:30-8 p.m. at Park Road Baptist Church's Milford Chapel, 3900 Park Road. Michael Wozniak announced that the Beatties Ford Road Library will for the first time host a three-week series of computer classes taught by CPCC's Human Resources Development Department. The classes are Tuesday through Friday, April 16 through May 3, Each class is two hours. Sign up in advance here www.cmlibrary.org/programs then through CPCC at the first class meeting. Sarah Stevenson announced that the April 30 Forum will be held at the Varick Renaissance Center, 3165 Zion Renaissance Lane, and include complementary full breakfast. Stevenson will report on her recent trip to South Africa. More information and a map are here. Singing at the breakfast is TyNia Rene' Brandon, who was crowned Miss Queen City 2013 in January, winning the talent portion of the pageant with a performance of the Italian aria "Star Vichino." Sheila Peltzer announced that two bills in the N.C. Senate and House Judiciary Committees address the presumption of shared parenting issues. She urged people to press legislators to put the bills on the legislative calendar for a vote, or "they will die there" in committee "and we have worked five years on this." Details here.

In his Forum presentation Tuesday, Housing Authority CEO Fulton Meachem passed out a folder including the following items: a one-page primer about the authority; a four-page "Overview of the Charlotte Housing Authority" of PowerPoint slides (not shown during presentation); an 8-page review of four Hope VI grant-funded developments:  First Ward (1993), Arbor Glen (1996), The Park at Oaklawn (1998), and Seigle Point (2003); and a 3-page review of Developments in Process.

In a short presentation on the disputed concrete median on a stretch of the rebuilt Beatties Ford Road, City Council District 2 member James Mitchell handed out a 3-page listing of contacts between Paul Holmes and city officials or their agent, dated from May 21, 2012 through April 18, 2013.

Geri Crooks announced for Carlenia Ivory that there would be a free Family MayFest featuring free food, prizes, student performances and games on Saturday, May 4 from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. at Johnson C. Smith University, 100 Beatties Ford Road. The sponsor is the Smith Institute for Applied Research, and the second page of the flier here is a permission slip parents must sign. The slip reads in part: "The Mayfest/Playfest is a participatory action research project, designed to collect and understand information on math/art & art/math, family play and interaction styles, in order to nuture effective interaction in Title 1 and Northwest Corridor School settings."
