ANNOUNCEMENTS from Feb. 5, 2013:

Dianna Davis announced that the Charlotte African American Festival scheduled for Feb. 23-24 at Independence High School is seeking performers, volunteers and vendors. Info is on their website.

Louise Woods announced a meeting about the streetcar on Wednesday, Feb. 6 at 6:30 p.m. in Gambrell Auditorium on the Johnson C. Smith University campus, 100 Beatties Ford Rd.

Zack Hill announced that political activist and academic Angela Davis will be at Davidson College on Tuesday, Feb. 12 to present the annual Warn Lecture. The free public lecture will be at 8 p.m. in the Duke Family Performance Hall on campus. No reservations are required. Davis is an emerita professor at the University of California at Santa Cruz.

Zack Hill announced that a computer training class for seniors continues on Saturdays from 1-3:30 p.m. at Ivory Baker Recreation Center, 1920 Stroud Park Court off Oaklawn Avenue.

LaWana Mayfield left word that inclement weather had forced postponement of a District 3 City Council meeting on Saturday, Jan. 26 (Announcements, Jan. 15). She said she would announce a rescheduled date soon.

Michael Sexton sent in a message that the Domestic Violence Advocacy Council invites the public to a march to raise awareness of domestic violence, in response to the first domestic violence homicides of the year involving Derrick Antoine Teasley, 32, and Shakendra Nicole Covington, 22. The march is Thursday, Feb. 7 at 12:15 p.m. at Trade and Tryon Streets.

Zack Hill announced the Northwest School of the Arts theater program, chosen last fall to perform The Color Purple at the University of Nebraska in June, has $60,000 left to raise to finance its trip.

Pamela McCarter sent in an announcement of a Career Day to mark Black History Month, on Saturday, Feb. 23 at 1 p.m. at the Beatties Ford Road Regional Library, 2412 Beatties Ford Road. Young people will "be able to meet successful African American professionals from various fields and ask questions about how they chose their current profession and what it took to get to where there are now." Tahira Stalberte sent in an announcement of three CMS town hall meetings on budget priorities and to allow the public to speak directly with members of the 22 task forces convened in January by Supt. Heath Morrison. The town halls will be Feb. 27 at E.E. Waddell Language Academy, 7030 Nations Ford Rd., Charlotte; March 4 at North Mecklenburg High, 11201 Old Statesville Rd.; and March 11 at Butler High School, 1810 Matthews-Mint Hill Rd. All will be 6-8:30 p.m., open with a 45-minute budget discussion led by Morrison, then continue with small groups focusing on the task forces. A flier is here.

Ledger Morrissette sent in an announcement of a free panel discussion on the Emancipation Proclamation, its constitutionality and legacy, and the 13th Amendment, on Saturday, Feb. 23 from 2-4 p.m. at the UNCC Center City Building, 320 E. 9th Street, in the 2nd floor auditorium. Panelists are UNCC history professors Dr. David Goldfield and Dr. Cheryl Hicks, and Charlotte School of Law professor Dr. Scott Broyles.

Reginald Johnson sent in an appeal for donations to help support 75 5th-graders and 15 chaperones from Thomasboro Academy on a planned trip to Washington, D.C. from Feb. 27-March 1. The itinerary is here. Items needed, that can be dropped off at the school at 538 Bradford Drive, include chips, juice boxes, water, cookies, first aid kits, underwear, socks, toothbrushes, toothpaste, kleenex and hand sanitizer. Announcements from Feb. 26, 2013:

Carlenia Ivory passed out a flier with dates, the first being Wednesday, Feb. 27, for CMS town halls about the 22 task forces preparing parts of a revision of the CMS strategic plan. She added two additional dates in April, which have been marked on the flier.

Blanche Penn announced that 3,000 people attended the recent African American history exhibit at Wallace Pruitt Recreation Center. She said the Center would take Bruns Avenue Academy students to the Bahamas this summer.

Gyasi Foluke announced that he would address black males at the Males Place, 2845 Beatties Ford Rd., Wednesday night, Feb. 27, at 6 p.m., and will conduct a seminar at the Unity Christian Center for three churches in Greensboro on March 9.

Beverly Irby announced that an American Cancer Society cancer research project is looking for healthy African Americans ages 30-65 to join a 20-30 year monitoring project to study how lifestyle factors affect cancer.
