[July 9: According to news reports, James Ross died Sunday, July 8, 2012.]

Dana French and David Howard sent in an invitation to a "Roast for Ross" in honor of the Honorable James Ross, who has entered hospice care. Writes Howard: "This event will give his family, friends and the community an opportunity to share memories, expressions of love and good old fashioned 'roast-style' funny stories. Please join us in sharing in this celebration and tribute honoring the man and his accomplishments. Ross will be viewing the roast 'live' via satellite."

The roast is Wednesday, July 11 from 3-5 p.m. at United House of Prayer, 2321 Beatties Ford Rd., with reception immediately following at Memorial Presbyterian, 2600 Beatties Ford Rd. A formal invitation is here.

Zack Hill announced the 3rd annual Soul Food Festival, to be held Saturday, July 7 from 5 p.m. on the lot at 9th and Brevard Streets. Details here.

Gautam Desai announced that Mecklenburg Democratic Party Chair Aisha Dew "has worked very hard to keep the party headquarters open from 10 a.m. to 7:30 p.m." weekdays, with unspecified shorter hours on Saturday and Sunday, "to come and volunteer to do the phone banks."

Louise Woods announced that the American Freedom Bell at the Museum of History would be rung on July Fourth. Hear it ring here.

Chance Lewis announced that he would sponsor during the Democratic National Convention an event at the UNCC Center City building to be focused on black males in Charlotte-Mecklenburg, to be co-hosted with U.S. Rep. Mel Watt. "We know that they are dying. The question is what programming are we putting in place to assist them."

Robert Dawkins sent in an announcement of a press conference Tuesday, July 10 at 2 p.m. at the Charlotte School of Law, 2145 Suttle Ave., to discuss re-enfranchising felons who have served their sentences, and re-integrating those with criminal records into society.

The Forum will not meet on July 17, which is 2nd primary Election Day throughout North Carolina and the West Charlotte Recreation Center will be being used as a precinct voting site.

Ken Koontz announced that the roast planned by James Ross before his death on Sunday will proceed, on Wednesday, July 11 from 3-5 p.m. at the United House of Prayer, 2321 Beatties Ford Rd., with a reception immediately following at Memorial Presbyterian, 2600 Beatties Ford Rd. Koontz said there would be no funeral or other memorial service. Koontz added: "The orders from James Ross, and now down through his wife, is, don't come to cry, don't come to bring sad stories, come with your best Jim Ross story."

Faith Triggs introduced two Housing Authority Scholarship recipients and encouraged participants to engage the students after the meeting "in the fine art of networking."

Zack Hill announced that the weekly computer class for seniors would resume this Saturday, July 14 from 1-3:30 p.m. at Ivory Baker Recreation Center, 1920 Stroud Park Court off Oaklawn Avenue.

Zack Hill announced that the Oscar, Spencer & Paul series continues on the 2nd Sundays at 1 p.m. at the Gantt Center, 551 S. Tryon St. The series honors black cinema pioneers Oscar Micheaux, Spencer Williams and Paul Robeson.

Chance Lewis sent in a save-the-date card for "Challenging the Status Quo: A Forum on Educational Equity and Inclusion for School-Age Black Males" featuring Howard University professor Ivory Toldson and Lewis from 2-4 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 5 at the UNCC Center City Campus, 320 E. 9th St. during the Democratic National Convention.
