Kim Ratliff offered thanks for support of her candidacy in the Mecklenburg Commissioners Democratic Primary on May 8.

Michael Barnes announced that Charlotte City Council would take votes on the budget, and possibly baseball, at its Monday, June 11 meeting.

Beverly Irby announced that the N.C. House had not included $250,000 in its budget for support of the N.C. Interagency Council on Coordinating Homeless Services. The cut would impact services to children, the SOAR program operating in Mecklenburg, along with the Point in Time survey of the homeless population.

Gloria Rembert announced that the Black Political Caucus in June would meet on the fourth Sunday, June 24, to avoid a conflict with Fathers Day. The meeting will be in the Caucus' new space at the former Double Oaks Elementary, 1326 Woodward Avenue off Statesville Avenue.

Gloria Rembert recommended a trip to the Pettus Bridge at Selma, Alabama. A celebration annually in March marks the 1965 Bloody Sunday march by civil rights demonstrators led by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. "It is an absolutely outstanding learning opportunity to teach about the movement... leading up the signing of the Voting Rights Act, and how a little town in Selma actually moved the country."

Brad Thompson sent in an announcement of the North Carolina Legislative Black Caucus Foundation Scholarship Banquet on this Friday, June 15, with presentations beginning at 1 p.m. and banquet in the evening, to be held at the Sheraton Imperial Hotel & Convention Center, 4700 Emperor Blvd in the Research Triangle Park, Durham. The event raises money for scholarships to 10 North Carolina HBCUs. Click here to purchase tickets.
