ANNOUNCEMENTS from May 5, 2009:

Blanche Penn announced competition between senior cheerleading teams for Thursday, May 7 at 7 p.m. at the Levine Senior Center, 1050 Devore Lane off N.C 51 in Matthews, just north of Independence Boulevard.

Thomas Moore announced that the event last Friday sponsored by Mecklenburg Times honoring "50 Most Influential Women" recognized, among others, Forum attendee Pam Jefsen of the Red Cross.

Lucy Bush Carter announced that one of Thomas Moore's former students, Daniel Anthony Heath, would be music director for Covenant Presbyterian Church's new contemporary worship service, Sundays at 9:30 a.m. at the church at Dilworth Road and Morehead Street.

Charles Boddi announced a fund-raiser for the ArtHouse art gallery at 3103 Cullman Ave. in NoDa. The event is at the ArtHouse on Saturday, May 9 from 7-11 p.m., featuring Bryan Anderson & Band and a silent auction. Semi-formal attire. Tickets are $15 in advance via www.ez-tixx.com or 877-993-8499.

Jennifer DeRue, a City of Charlotte business services coordinator for the Beatties Ford Road, Eastland Mall and Rozzelles Ferry Road corridors, announced that she would like to meet with business persons in those corridors to make them aware of grants and other services available to them.

Sara Stevenson announced that first- through fifth-graders at the Greater Enrichment Program would sing in "The Me Nobody Knows," directed by Defoy Glenn, on Saturday, May 9 at 2 p.m. at Myers Park Methodist Church. For information, 704-334-8518.

Virginia Keogh sent in an announcement that County Commissioner Vilma Leake would host a seminar Monday, May 18 at 6:30 p.m. at the Ivory Baker Recreation Center, 1920 Stroud Park Court off Oaklawn Avenue to discuss free government services available to seniors.

Donna Jenkins (Dawson) Taylor sent in an announcement that Crisis Assistance Ministry's Furniture and Appliance Store is on a course that will leave it unable to respond this year to more than half the requests from the public for assistance. Natheley McElrath announced for Sarah Coleman that a community forum on education organized by District 2 County Commissioner Vilma Leake would be held this Saturday, May 30 at 10 a.m. at C.N. Jenkins Memorial Presbyterian Church, 1421 Statesville Ave.

Ken Koontz announced that DVDs of WENS-TV coverage of 2009 Inauguration Week in Washington are still available and that he can be booked to give 10-minute presentations to groups.

Gwen Forney announced that she would be in touch by e-mail with volunteers participating in Thursday's Career Day at Billingsville Elementary.

Tammy Hill, who has led parent opposition to CMS plans to redistrict Lincoln Heights Elementary, announced that CMS Supt. Peter Gorman would hold his weekly press conference at Lincoln Heights Elementary on this Wednesday, May 27, at 9:15 a.m.

Donna Jenkins (Dawson) Taylor sent in an announcement of the Community Building Initiative's Front Porch Grants of up to $2,500 "to support small-scale gatherings that build social capital and make connections between people."
