Richard McElrath announced that the Mixed Use Housing Committee plans to
make appearances before county commissioners Feb. 17, the city council
Feb. 23 and the school board Feb. 24 to support inclusionary housing
policies countywide and to press public bodies with vacant land to
include affordable housing in development plans for those parcels. "We
will need some butts in the seats because they are going to look beyond
what we say and see who is supporting us."

Roslyn Jacobs announced that MeckEd, Mecklenburg Citizens for Public
Education, will hold a free workshop for prospective school board
candidates and the general public entitled "Leading our Schools:
Understanding School Finance and Budgeting" on Thursday, Feb. 12, from

County Commissioner Harold Cogdell announced that this year's county
budget deliberations would be "the most difficult in many, many years.
When some people realize the impact that some of our cuts will have,
there will be an outcry." He encouraged people to let commissioners
know, "in a proactive way, not a reactive way" about county-financed
programs that they value. He passed along the following recent county
board budget documents involving cuts to the current county budget. The
documents may be downloaded from the Forum website:

Feb. 20 memo from County Manager Harry Jones dealing chiefly with the
Sheriff's decision to close Gatling Juvenile Detention Center. (2
pages).
2. A text
document on FY 2009 Budget Reductions, including a three-page
summary of the $20.069 million in cuts, then 11 pages of details of cuts
by departments. (14 pages).
3. An
Excel spreadsheet of line-item detail on the FY2009 department
