ANNOUNCEMENTS from Jan. 10, 2006:
--
Malachi Greene described and the Forum endorsed a proposal to use the month of February to "pull together a series of discussions about Black History centering on the significant contributions may by people who live in Charlotte."
--
Frances Hall announced a grand opening Jan. 25 from 1-4 p.m. for a family counseling and rehabilitation center that opened Monday at 1406 Beatties Ford Road. She introduced Dr. Kendall Jasper, a licensed psychologist who will operate from the center. Hall acknowledged Myers Park United Methodist Church and Forum regular Rev. Alesa Lasater for assistance in launching the facility.

Jackie Walton announced that Sarah Stevenson was absent to be with her son Sam, who was hospitalized Monday for a lung ailment.

Thomas Moore announced the "Daybreak for Freedom" concert Monday at 7 p.m. at the Blumenthal Performing Arts Center. Tickets are $5 and up, and Moore said he had access to tickets for groups of students who could attend.
--
Polly Little announced that Rep. Becky Carney leaves Thursday with other legislators and about 20 educators on a trip to South Africa to study issues of education and the global economy.

Geraldine Brisbane announced that the Brisbane Academy's annual open house would be Feb. 5 from 3-5 p.m.
--
School Board District 2 member Vilma Leake urged that speakers addressing the Forum on Black History be encouraged to make similar presentations at area public schools. "Many of our students don't even know who Dr. Martin Luther King was.... Parents are not doing their job in teaching our history."
--
Deacon Jones acknowledged former Louise Woods for her long years of service on the CMS school board.
--
Park and Recreation's Neil Carroll sent in announcements that the Third Ward Plan had been put on hold pending decision about a baseball stadium; that the District I Advisory Council meets Monday, Jan. 23 at 6 p.m. at the Amay James Recreation Center; that District II Advisory Council next meets Feb. 20 at 6:30 p.m. at Ray's Splash Planet; and that District III Advisory Council meets Wednesday, Jan. 18 at 6 p.m. at the Freedom Park Indoor Facility.

Sylvia Grier sent in an announcement that Millions More Movement Charlotte meetings, held the second and fourth Mondays at 6:30 p.m., would henceforth be held at Little Rock AME Zion Church, 401 N. McDowell St.

ANNOUNCEMENTS from Jan. 17, 2006:

Maria Macon announced an "Alternative Health Potpourri" forum to be held Thursday, Jan. 26 from 5:30-9 p.m. at the Carol Hoefener Center, 610 E. 7th St. Among the participants is California healing arts practitioner Marini Emile.

Geraldine Brisbane announced that the Brisbane Academy's exchange program to South Africa would be held May 19-29.
--
Vernon Herron asked Ms. Brisbane if she were the Geraldine who had married longtime Forum participant T.B. Haynes. As Brisbane managed a puzzled face and a courteous denial, Haynes piped up from the back of the room, "You know who my wife is. You used to go with her."

Dwayne Collins announced that the Black Political Caucus held officer elections and elected Danielle Obiorah, president; Dwayne Collins, first vice president; Darrel Bonaparte, second vice president; and Jonni Collins, third vice president. The caucus meets the third Sunday evening of the month at Memorial Presbyterian Church, 2600 Beatties Ford Road.

Thelma McCoy suggested that the Forum devote a meeting to the Homeland Security Act, which she called "a recipe for dictatorship."

Blanche Penn announced that the Winners Plus Agency comic book would be adapted for the stage, with rehearsals beginning soon. She promised more details next week.

Parks and Recreation's Jackie Hemingway announced that volunteer judges are needed for the Black History Quiz Bowl to be held at Freedom Park. To volunteer, call Hemingway at 704-353-1246.

Rodney Moore announced that the NAACP meets the fourth Thursday at 7 p.m. at Weeping Willow AME Zion, 2220 Milton Road.

Park and Recreation's Neil Carroll sent in announcements that on any day with significant snow accumulations, the department would hold activities at Cordelia Park. More information: 704-336-3367. He also said Parks and Recreation invites groups willing to do volunteer work in the parks to contact Volunteer Coordinator Lori Saylor at 704-336-5478.

CORRECTION: These announcements erred in reporting that N.C. Rep. Becky Carney was part of a delegation to South Africa. Polly Little writes: "I hope I said [Jan. 10] that Becky Carney is headed to India, not South Africa. If I said South Africa, then I erred." Carney left Jan. 12 with other legislators and about 20 educators on a trip to study issues of education and the global economy.
